I live in Long Beach, Ca. and my city just passed a law that requires all cat owners to license their cats by year's end, just as dogs are required to be licensed.

I never heard of cats being licensed. How can you keep track of them unless they are a house cat that doesn't roam the neighborhood. And if it's a house cat animal control wouldn't even know it exists.

Anyone know of city ordinances elsewhere that requires cat licensing? Does it work?

Artie, our Northern Calif. neighbors have that city law , too. Marin comes to mind.

Now that Cities/Counties _need_ money and they know that pet ppl spend billions on their furppl, why not ?

Ppl are going to complain , especially those who can't afford to license their cats?

It's also a form of animal control for a population run amok; in order to have that license you'll probably have to spay/neuter (sp?) your cat , too. ( that should be the case anyway, imho)

Many places have had it for years , with lic. being staggerd from free upwards . All cats being fixed , but haveing registration / Lic. free , not fixed 1 cat of 1 sex , 2 cats same sex and so forth differing rates . Some of the towns I have lived in / near had no animal officers so police / fire / park employees were pulled from a more important activity to handle an ever growing number of complaints .

I for years delivered shoppers in the business district in winter block after block had cat tracks at doorways before I got there at daybreak , they were not all the same I bet I saw 10 diff cats , all cold and starving .

My cats have always had to be licensed. Rabies shots are required every year, too.

I understand that the city will require a rabies shot, plus the cat must be spayed or neutered. Cost of licensing has not been set yet.

Hi Becky! Rabies vaccines in felines are good for 3-5 years, possibly even longer. I get my pets titer tests.

Their blood is sent to a lab to decifer how much of the vaccines are left in their systems. I have an 8 year old cat who has not needed her rabies vaccine or booster vaccine since two years of age. She has enough of the vaccine in her system to not need it. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't need anymore vaccines for the rest of her life.

Veterinary colleges are learning that vaccines every year for both dogs and cats are over-vaccinating. Over-vaccinating can cause cancer, vaccine site sarcomas, kidney/liver damage, ect.

Having vaccines every year gives your veterinarian a chance to examine your pet on a yearly basis. Talk to your veterinarian about titer testing (it's not much more expensive than the vaccines are) and assure him that although you do not want your pet vaccinated on a yearly basis, you will bring him/her in for a physical examination, which is extremely important in pet health.
If the titer testing comes back with results that show that there is enough of the rabies vaccine in your cats' systems, you will be given an updated rabies tag.
