Having the snowleopard OS X on a 32" is breathtaking.

I find that 640 X 480 (strecthed) set in the OS display & the 'just scan' mode for picture size on the TV, works best for me. The OS warns me it's not optimal and for some of the Apple features like iPHOTO I have to change settings, no big deal though. The array of ways to change screen size is impressive. I can't sit as far away from the screen as when on the deuce, but I've adjusted to that, I've found 7' to be about right. The Macmini is a little pricey but I think it's worth it for all the usual reasons. Kind of like those small Bose speakers that never seem to change in price. Small but efficient. I have no regrets about the Mini-- except wish I had jumped ship sooner. Hard to figure why Microsoft is letting the TV market slip away. btw I have a 720P LCD / SAMSUNG eom

Hi Jan, When did you get a MacMini? I'd like to think I influenced you in some way to purchase an Apple product. I have an iMac, but have been slouching toward a MacMini purchase. Like the bumper sticker says: "Whoever has the most toys when he dies, wins." I see myself as using it primarily for media content, but who knows - I may become a recliner potato for more computing chores.

I also have a 32" 720p Samsung, so it's good to know it plays well with the MacMini. What model did you get and what keyboard/mouse are you using? I'm thinking, hoping really, that I don't need the most expensive Mini for my purposes. Also, how is it hooked up? btw: I change resolution settings frequently and really like 640 x 480 for many applications

Sandy

Hi Sandy, I got it in February. Set-up day was rough for a few reasons. I found the router/modem bit intimidating so I had a friend that's an Apple luv'r do it and set the basic parameters. The ATT/DSL was giving me problems along with my phone lines for several days beforehand. I picked-up the Mac OSX Snow Leopard- The Missing Manual by David Pogue, which I can highly recommend if your a first time Apple person, like me. But after1-2 days the deuce was not needed. I bough it at the local Apple store. I bought the $99.00 training, but cancelled that within the allowed 24hr period because really I didn't need it. I had no computer files to transfer over and had no burning questions to ask or projects to work on. The folks at the Apple Store were helpful. I have the cordless keyboard you don't like and the Apple Super mouse. I like them both, the mouse does go thru batteries thou. I type with thumbs so the small lite keyboard works surprisingly well. All the Apple stuff is over priced but what the hell. I got the cheap Mac $599.00 it's more than enough for me. RCA cables for sound DVI to HDMI to the TV. Cordless D-link router & deuce on ethernet.
I think the new model Mini just announced is better way to go.
Your posts didn't make much difference, sorry. All the posts I've read and just having it in the back of my mind for along time did. I thought it was just the right time to do so. I use it much the same as I used the deuce. Oh, I've used the Chrome browser since day one.
Thanks for all your well written posts thou. No doubt your a top-notch poster.

I have NEVER owned a pc and I have eyeballing the 'new' mac mini. The price seems a bit steep but ONE of my concerns was about my TV. I see that someone has been using an analog tv vs getting a new hdtv but I didn't see anywhere exactly how that was done. HDMI to analog tv is the issue here. IF it really is too much of a hassle hooking to analog, then I would consider (maybe) getting a different tv.

The other concern is whether to get the mac mini server w/o the optical drive for more memory or just stick with the base unit with the optical drive for $699 - again, I am new at this. (sigh) I am already in a quandry....

Jeff, you will do fine with the base model Mini for $699, and I would advise you to get a new LCD TV, the size is up to you. With the new TV you will have much less of a problem hooking up.

Of course, the alternative is to get an iMac, either the 21.5" or 27", but this will be a desktop model. By the time you spend $699 for the Mini, around $400 for a TV, another $100-150 for keyboard and mouse, you'll be right around the $$1200-$1250 range.

Base model 21.5 iMac is $1200, and it comes with keyboard and mouse. I and my friend Jerry have been using the old 17" iMac for about 3 1/2 years now and love it. So it's your choice of how you want to use it. Both are excellent machines!!!

Good luck.....

Ok, I get interested in buying the new (2010) Mac Mini and today I see this UPGRADE that came out either the same day or the next day after the new mini was released. Great! I can only guess that the OSX version in the new model is 10.6.3 based on what this apple support news says. It's about an upgrade to to OSX 10.6.4

http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1054

I saw the update on several sites and they were all dated around the same date as the new mac mini release. I don't even own one yet and it needs to be upgraded??? (sigh)

Jeff, you say "needs to be upgraded" like it was a bad thing. It is not. Apple stays on top of issues and resolves them quickly. It is certainly not surprising that a new model might need minor improvements for some applications..

As a matter of fact, we get upgrades routinely. They are painless, quick and easy, especially with broadband. And, they are FREE. You just push a button agreeing to upgrade or postpone it until later. I may be the biggest techno-phobe to ever buy a computer and I can assure you that upgrades belong on the bottom of any list of things to fret about.
